Parents & Guardians

Parents & Guardians are the first line of support for their students as they return to school this year. Students are returning to school with even more pressure due to COVID-19. Lack of socialization, isolation, loss of instructional time and anxiety are all part of their new reality.  This stress has made it even more important for parents and guardians to be aware of available resources. Here you will find resources regarding students' mental health, returning to school, social emotional learning, anti-bullying/violence prevention, and suicide prevention.  Resources are also available for vulnerable populations in addition to anonymous reporting and crisis support.

Mental Health

SEL Standards
Social-emotional learning includes competencies like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, collaboration, empathy, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. The elements of social-emotional learning give children the tools to become resilient and persistent in life.

Ohio CareLine
The Ohio CareLine is a toll-free emotional support call service created by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and administered in community settings. Behavioral health professionals staff the CareLine 24 hours a day, 7 days/week. They offer confidential support in times of personal or family crisis when individuals may bestruggling to cope with challenges in their lives. When callers need additional services, they will receive assistance and connection to local providers.

Anti-Bullying Resource All Ohio public schools work to create safe and supportive learning environments for their students and staff. As part of these efforts, state law says districts must have policies prohibiting harassment, intimidation and bullying Anti-Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Resources | Ohio Department of Education.

Trauma Informed Resource
A trauma-informed school is one in which all students and staff feel safe, welcomed and supported and where the impact of trauma on teaching and learning is addressed at the center of the educational mission.

LGBTQ Resource
Returning to school can be stressful, especially after the odd school year we had where many were online all year. This may have been a relief if you face bullying during in person learning. Returning to in person can cause even more anxiety for LGBTQ students who face these issues. Knowing where to find support is very important. SAVE Students ACT
School districts are required at least one hour (or one standard class period) each school year of ODE-approved instruction on the topics of: (1) suicide awareness and prevention, (2) safety training and violence prevention, and (3) social inclusion in the health curriculum for grades 6-12. Parents may opt their child out of the instruction. Find out more at the below link.

Suicide Prevention Resource
ODE, in consultation with DPS and OhioMHAS, is required to maintain a list of approved, evidence-based training programs for instructing staff and students on suicide awareness and prevention and violence prevention. At least one program must be free to schools.

Anonymous Reporting
The Safer Ohio School Tip Line is a free safety resource available to all Ohio schools. The tip line is an anonymous reporting system that accepts both calls and texts 24 hours a day. This tip line allows students and adults to anonymously share information with school officials and law enforcement about threats to student safety—whether that involves a threatened mass incident or harm to a single student. Encourage your Administrator’s to register!

Cyber Security

DHS Back to School Campaign
Phishing attacks use email or malicious websites to infect machines with malware and viruses to collect personal and financial information. Cybercriminals use these attacks to entice users to click on a link or open an attachment that can then infect their computers, creating vulnerability to attacks. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Phishing Tip Sheet has additional information on combating phishing. 

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages everyone - students, parents, teachers, administrators and chief information security officers of school districts to review our recently released StopRansomware.gov – a new website designed to help individuals and organizations prevent attacks that can severely impact business processes and leave organizations without the data they need to operate and deliver mission-critical services.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is kicking off its 2021 Back to School campaign to help students, parents, teachers, and administrators remain safe from cybersecurity threats as they return to school. The campaign will run from August 9 until August 30. Check our social media accounts, @CISAgov and @Cyber, during the campaign for more cybersecurity tips.

Addressing the Whole Child

Whole Child Framework
Ohio’s strategic plan for education, Each Child, Our Future, puts the whole child at the center, where each component of the plan works harmoniously to support a whole-child approach. Likewise, Ohio’s Whole Child Framework also places the whole child at the center, with district, school, family and community supporting the needs of the whole child using a comprehensive approach. A whole child approach broadens district and school focus beyond academics to include meeting students social-emotional, physical and safety needs. The Whole Child Framework provides a blueprint to meet these whole child needs, which are foundational to a child’s intellectual and social development and necessary for students to fully engage in learning and school.
